Young children like to know what to expect, predictability reassures them in an otherwise unpredictable world. For this reason, having a good bedtime routine is essential. Having a good bedtime routine will help your child know that bedtime is approaching and have a profound impact on their sleep. Typically, it is recommended to begin a bedtime routine 15-30 minutes prior to bedtime. However, I recommend extending that slightly and aiming for at least a 30-45 minute bedtime routine. Your probably wondering, ok but how do I fill in that time? But this is a really great opportunity to interact with your child, securing that connection before bedtime.
For older children, asking them how their day was and talking to them about how your day was, sharing your favorite parts and stories is a great way to end the day.
For me, I find that getting my boys involved in the bedtime routine has really helped. We like to do the following together:
Dim the lights in the house
Close the blinds in our main living areas
Close the blinds in their bedroom
Turn on their white noise
Pick their pajamas
Pick a book to read
Choose which toys they would like to have in the bath
It's very important, even on the busy nights or the late nights to try and not skip parts of the bedtime routine. Why?
You will probably find that if you try and rush your child to bed, or say no to the bedtime story because it's too late, your child will protest more and take longer to actually fall asleep.
On these nights, if bedtime is 10-15 minutes later than usual, don't fret it! Enjoy the time together and at the end of the day connection and reassurance before bedtime is more important than worrying about the time.
